1993 State Champions

The season

Northampton won its first PIAA team title in 1993, finishing a perfect 24–0 season ranked No. 1 in the nation. Coach Don Rohn was named PIAA Coach of the Year.

The Kids opened the year ranked No. 2 in the state behind Canon-McMillan, with 11 starters back. On opening weekend they beat New York's top-ranked Longwood 42–26 at the Valley Youth House Elite Duals, and they won the Cedar Cliff Duals when Jason Grim's fall decided a 32–26 final with Pine Grove. The biggest regular-season night came Jan. 23 in front of about 3,600 fans at Liberty: a 26–23 win over Nazareth, built on Denny Liberto's major decision at 103, Rich Kutzler's cradle for a fall at 152, and Grim's fall at heavyweight. A 69–3 win over Whitehall clinched the East Penn title.

The postseason was a sweep. Northampton won the District XI Duals 37–12 over Easton, the District XI team title 216–194 over Nazareth with a record 11 semifinalists, and the Northeast Regional team title with four champions. At Hershey, Mike Tomsic pinned Conestoga's Jason LaMotta in 45 seconds for the 112-pound title, and three more Kids placed. The town welcomed the team home with a parade on March 21, and Superintendent Ralph Tarola called it one of the greatest moments in Northampton sports history.
