Ryan McCallum

PIAA State Champion · 2000

The story

Ryan McCallum won the 2000 PIAA Class AAA title at 130 pounds in Don Rohn's final season as head coach. He finished the year 40–5.

He came to Northampton from Berks County for his senior season, a year after placing 2nd at states for Wilson (West Lawn). He won the Holiday Classic, beat Easton's Gino Fortebuono 3–1 in overtime at the District Duals for Fortebuono's first loss, and edged defending champion Christian Franco of Whitehall 6–5 for the District XI title. Fortebuono pinned him in the regional semifinal, but McCallum came back for 3rd. At Hershey he beat Rick Bauer of McGuffey 11–6, Mark Maney of Bald Eagle Area 11–3, Franco again 2–1 in the semifinal, and Chris Graber of Greater Latrobe 9–4 in the final.

It was a fitting send-off for Rohn. The 2000 Kids went 23–1, won the PIAA team duals title 30–19 over Connellsville, set a state record at the time with eight place winners, and won the program's fifth PIAA team title. Rohn finished 309–59 with five team titles and eight individual State Champions.
